Our Vision for Maths

At Bassett Green Primary School, we want every child to have a deep understanding of maths and make connections by being…

  • confident – believe “I can do maths”.
  • curious – ask questions, spot patterns and take risks.
  • fluent – know number facts and use them quickly.
  • resilient – keep trying, even when it’s hard.
  • problem-solvers – use maths to find answers in real life.

Maths is for everyone, every day, everywhere.

At our school, we believe every child can be a successful mathematician. We provide a rich, ambitious maths curriculum that empowers all children to be confident, curious learners; fluent mathematicians who apply knowledge with accuracy; and resilient problem-solvers who persevere through challenges and learn from mistakes. Through our mastery approach to maths, children will develop a deep, connected understanding that enables them to reason, explain, and justify their thinking whilst making meaningful links.

Above all, we want our children to be prepared for everyday life, using mathematics to solve real problems and make sense of the world around them. Our aim is for every child to experience success and enjoyment in mathematics so that they leave primary school with the fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills needed for lifelong opportunities.

Our Maths Curriculum

At Bassett Green Primary School, ambition for all children is our intention and we use Ark Curriculum Plus ‘Mathematics Mastery Primary Programme’ to support us to achieve this.

The programme is designed to enable all children to build a deep understanding of maths based on ARK’s unique pedagogical principles derived from research and practice.  The three dimensions of depth to teaching and learning are: language and communication, conceptual understanding and mathematical thinking with mathematical problem solving at the heart of mathematics teaching and learning.

Through a mastery learning approach, careful sequencing of content, instruction and rehearsal our children develop new and consistent patterns of useful information.  All children use concrete apparatus and pictorial representations to ensure a sound understanding of concepts.

Our teaching and learning resources:

  • Build on solid, evidence-led pedagogical principles – the Dimensions of Depth which gives us confidence that they will have the greatest positive impact on our children.
  • Promote oracy in a flexible and fun way that works for our children, making mathematical success accessible to everyone.
  • Provide structure and support so that we own the curriculum, with quick videos and at a glance planning guides.
  • Include adaptation examples and guidance to suit our children and school’s needs.

Further information on what is taught in each year group and the key representations that we use, can be seen below.
