  • Assessment and Performance

At Bassett Green Primary School, we see assessment as an integral part of teaching and learning. Using a range of assessments, we gain a picture of what children know and understand, and what they need to do next to move forward. It also helps us to ensure that our teaching is appropriate and that learners are making expected progress. We ensure that assessment is closely linked to the national curriculum and that the school is keeping up to date with external best practice and innovation, and we have a senior leader with responsibility for this area.

Assessment for learning is at the heart of our approach. By identifying starting points and clear next steps, and involving children in the process, we will use assessment as a means to help children progress with their learning.

At Bassett Green Primary School, we ensure that:

    1. Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning, based on best practice, focusing on the curriculum and that it lies at the heart of promoting children’s education.
    2. High quality, in-depth teaching is supported and informed by high quality formative assessment (ongoing assessment).
    3. The school ethos promotes and emphasises the opportunity for all children to succeed if taught and assessed effectively.
    4. There is always a clear purpose for assessing and assessment is fit for its intended purpose.
    5. Assessment is used to focus on monitoring and supporting children’s progress, attainment and wider outcomes.
    6. Assessment provides information which is clear, reliable and free from bias, and informs teaching and learning.
    7. Assessment supports informative and productive conversations with pupils and parents.
    8. Children take responsibility for achievements and are encouraged to reflect on their own progress, understand their strengths and identify what they need to do to improve.
    9. We achieve our assessment without adding unnecessarily to teacher workload.
    10. Assessment is inclusive of all abilities.
    11. A range of assessments are used including day-to-day and weekly ongoing assessments, termly and end of year assessments.

We use three broad overarching forms of assessment: day-to-day formative assessment, summative assessment and nationally standardised summative assessment.
