Helping Children Learn

KS2 (Years 3 - 6)

Children in Years 3 - 6 are registered on the Accelerated Reader programme.  Children are assessed and given a reading level - they can select any book from the school library in line with their reading level to read.  Once they have finished the book, they complete an online quiz to demonstrate their understanding.

Each book is given a points value, based on the degree of difficulty and the length of the book.  Children have their own individual points target to work towards each half term.  You can monitor your child's progress towards their target, as well as their comprehension of the books that they are reading by logging into their account at

Each half term we have a reward assembly, which celebrated the achievements of children at all reading levels.  Awards presented include:

  • Bronze, Silver and Gold Reading Stars - for children who achieve their individual points target each half term (Bronze the first time target is achieved, Silver the second time, and Gold the third time)
  • Word Count certificates - children are rewarded with certificates for each milestone - this is cumulative through the year.
  • Class Champions - classes compete in year groups to achieve the highest total word count - everyone's contribution is required!

If your child would like to read books that they have at home, you can check if they are the correct level for your child, and whether they have an Accelerated Reader by using AR book finder:

If you have any questions, please contact your child's class teacher in the first instance.
